Matthew McCarl, SWLC
Matthew is passionate about helping people overcome the challenges of OCD, anxiety, and related disorders. With both personal and professional experience in this area, he brings not only evidence-based expertise but also genuine empathy to his work. He knows first-hand how scary and overwhelming these conditions can feel, and he also knows recovery is possible. His goal is to help clients build intentional, meaningful, and joyful lives.
Matthew uses Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP), and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) in his sessions. He is trained in ASAM criteria for substance use assessment and placement and has experience supporting individuals with co-occurring mental health and substance use challenges. His approach is trauma-informed, collaborative, and centered on the unique needs of each client.
Matthew has years of experience working across diverse settings including schools, re-entry programs, and community organizations. He has supported children, adolescents, young adults, and families navigating stress, trauma, depression, substance use, and life transitions. Whether meeting with teens, coordinating with families, or providing recovery support, he creates a safe space where clients can be real and explore more than just their diagnoses.
When he is not in session, Matthew enjoys reading, spending time with his wife, family, and friends, and cheering on his favorite sports teams.
Matthew is currently accepting new clients ages 6 and up for telehealth sessions in Montana under the supervision of Michelle Puerner, LCSW.
